At What Age Can My Child First See a Chiropractor?

The short answer: from day one. Newborns can be seen as soon as a few hours after birth.

That probably surprises you — most parents assume chiropractic is something for adults, or maybe older kids who play sports. But pediatric chiropractic care isn't a smaller version of adult care. It's a completely different approach, designed for bodies that are still developing, with techniques that bear no resemblance to what you'd see in an adult adjustment.

Here's what care actually looks like at each age — and why parents in San Antonio are increasingly asking us to evaluate their kids.

Newborns and infants (0–12 months).

Birth is hard on a baby's body. Even uncomplicated births involve significant pressure on the head, neck, and upper spine. Interventions like vacuum extraction, forceps, or C-section involve more. Babies often emerge with subtle structural patterns that affect how they feed, sleep, digest, and develop.

Common reasons parents bring infants in.

  • Difficulty breastfeeding on one side (a sign the neck doesn't rotate equally)
  • Always turning head to the same direction (torticollis)
  • Colic, reflux, or excessive spit-up
  • Trouble settling, irritability that doesn't have an obvious cause
  • Constipation
  • Flat spot developing on one side of the head

What care looks like. Adjustments for infants involve about the same pressure you'd use to test a ripe tomato. We use Torque Release Technique — instrument-based, gentle, specific. There's no "popping," no twisting, nothing forceful. Most babies sleep through it. Many fall asleep during it.

Visits are short — often 5–10 minutes. The first appointment is longer because we do a full evaluation, talk through your baby's birth story, and look at how they're moving and developing.

Toddlers (1–3 years).

Toddlers spend their lives falling. Walking is essentially controlled falling, and learning to walk involves a lot of failed attempts. Most of those falls are harmless, but some create patterns of restriction that compound over time. Add the everyday physical reality of toddler life — climbing, jumping off furniture, learning to run — and there's plenty going on with their developing spines.

Common reasons parents bring toddlers in.

  • After a significant fall (especially head-first)
  • Recurring ear infections
  • Sleep disruption that started after a specific incident
  • Constipation or other digestive issues
  • Behavior changes that don't have an obvious cause
  • Speech or motor milestones that seem delayed

What care looks like. Still very gentle, still instrument-based. Toddlers are usually curious about the office and the equipment, and we let them explore. Visits remain short. Many parents say their child looks forward to the visits — and that's the goal.

Children (4–11 years).

School-age kids start dealing with their first real postural challenges: backpacks, screen time, sitting at desks for hours, organized sports. Their nervous systems are also under more stress — academic pressure, social dynamics, the daily realities of being a kid in 2026.

Common reasons parents bring kids in.

  • Headaches (more common than parents realize)
  • Posture concerns, especially as kids spend more time on screens
  • Sports-related discomfort or after a specific injury
  • Sleep difficulties
  • Focus and attention issues
  • Bedwetting beyond the typical age
  • Frequent illness

What care looks like. The same instrument-based approach as younger kids. We adjust based on the child's size and what we find on examination. Many parents add their kids to their own care schedule — adjustments for the whole family at once.

Pre-teens and teens (12–17 years).

Adolescence brings rapid physical changes, the start of athletic intensity, and significant nervous system challenges. Tech neck starts showing up at this age in serious ways. Anxiety becomes more common. Sports injuries get more impactful as bodies grow and athletic demands increase.

Common reasons parents bring teens in.

  • Tech neck, headaches, and posture issues
  • Sports performance and injury recovery
  • Sleep difficulties (often related to nervous system dysregulation)
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Migraines
  • Maintaining a healthy spine through growth spurts

What care looks like. Still instrument-based and gentle, but we can also incorporate more comprehensive evaluation since teens can communicate clearly about what they're feeling. Many teens take real ownership of their care once they understand how it's helping.

Is pediatric chiropractic actually safe?

Yes — when performed by a chiropractor trained specifically in pediatric care, using age-appropriate techniques. The biggest concern parents bring up is "is it safe to adjust a baby's spine?" — and the honest answer is that the techniques used for infants bear no resemblance to adult adjustments. There's no twisting, no force, no "popping." It's gentle, specific pressure designed for a baby's body.

Research on pediatric chiropractic safety has consistently shown an excellent safety profile when care is provided by appropriately trained practitioners. The complications you sometimes hear about in the news typically involve adult-style manipulation applied to children — which isn't what pediatric chiropractic actually is.

We're trained specifically for pediatric care. We've adjusted thousands of children, including newborns. We're happy to walk you through the technique, show you the instrument, and let you ask any questions before deciding.

If you're considering chiropractic for your child.

The first step is an evaluation. We'll talk through what brought you in, look at how your child is moving and developing, and tell you honestly whether we think we can help. If we don't think chiropractic is the right fit for what you're dealing with, we'll say so.
